June 1 marked my first official day of summer, so my reading time became aloooooot bigger, and overall the reading didn’t disappoint! This also seemed to be the month of some pretty good beach reads for me.

The 17th Suspect by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Amazon

This whole series has got to be one of my favorites! It’s so easy to go back to these characters and just fall back into their stories and friendships. It involved four main women who are apart of the “Women’s Murder Club.” The “club” consists of  four best friends all from San Francisco: detective Lindsay Boxer, medical examiner Claire Washburn, reporter Cindy Thomas, and lawyer Yuki Castellano. You could easily pick up on the 17th book and not be too lost, but I would so recommend starting from the beginning and have this be your easy go-to series when you’re not sure what you’re in the mood for! This particular book has two story lines going with two different crimes that kept the plot moving right along. I was able to figure out one of the situations early on, but wasn’t sure which way the second was going to turn out! The characters are so relatable and makes you feel like you’re one of the girls in the club.

Spot on your list: Middle of the list… keep these stocked on your shelves when you’re in a slump! Definitely appeals to my Law and Order/ Criminal Mind lovers

IMG_0295.jpgPretty Girls by Karin Slaughter
Amazon

If you’ve read Karin Slaughter before, I know you’ll feel me when I say it feels like I need to go to therapy after reading her books. I’m so torn because I really like the overall stories and they are high action… but THEY. ARE. INTENSE. Definitely not a read for the faint of heart. This suspenseful book hooks readers instantly and keeps your mind jumping between who you think you can and can’t trust, which characters are lying, and which are in on their schemes. Over twenty years ago, a young girl, Julia, mysteriously went missing when walking home after a night out. This disappearance leaves her sisters Claire and Lydia and their parents searching for answers and trying to find their sister years later. Jump twenty years ahead to now, when another teenage girl goes missing in circumstances that appear very similar to their sister’s disappearance. About halfway through, I felt everyone was guilty and no one can be trusted, it had me second guessing everything I thought up until that point! Although parts were hard to stomach (Think Law and Order SVU meets Criminal Minds) it had me feeling like I was Olivia Benson trying to figure out who needed to be apprehended and it had me sweating and my nerves on high!

Spot on your list: Move it to the middle of your shelf. It’s a nice follow up to a sappy, romance book 🙂

The Forever Summer by Jamie Brenner
Amazon

To say I am in love with this author would be an understatement! This is the absolute perfect beach read, and I can’t wait to get my hands on The Husband Hour.   It takes place in the cutest town at a family run bed and breakfast and ends up reuniting a family. It was such a quick read, you’ll love the characters, and it has a bit of a mysterious element thrown in. It was so easy to get into and will have you smiling, crying, and wanting to find the nearest beach Bed and Breakfast ASAP.

Spot on your list: Move it to the top and get your self a margarita or a nice glass of wine.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
Amazon

This book is definitely one of my top reads of 2018… possibly in general! This is like your favorite RomCom movie played out in a book (and we all know the book is always better.) Joshua and Lucy, twenty-something professionals work “together” in an office and are officially sworn enemies, that end up vying for the promotion. Through a series of events, they end up seeing each other a lot more outside of work where their hate for one another seemingly grows… until they realize it isn’t actually hate they feel. Lucy and Josh are so relatable and will actually have you laughing out loud. The plot moves along so well and will have you devouring this book and falling in love with the characters in no time. There were parts where I laughed out loud (awkward I’m sure for people around me) and I am sure a smile was plastered on my face through the whole book.

Spot on your list: This needs to be your next read. Move this baby right to the top!

IMG_0292The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
Amazon

This book is steammmmmmy! Way more so than I anticipated. I actually picked this up through my Book of the Month, which I highly recommend, as it’s such a good deal for new hardcover books! Initially, I didn’t pick a book for this month because there weren’t any that really stood out to me, but after seeing other’s reviews I went back and added it to my cart.. and I’m so glad I did.  I read this right after The Hating Game, and they seemed really similar to me. The characters are super relatable, and it gives a slight glimpse into the world of dating when one has Aspergers. Overall, it’s just a really cute book that would be a great follow up after you’ve read one too many thrillers (just me?)

Spot on your list: I really liked it, and would have it on reserve for when you need to lighten the mood.

IMG_0291Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris
Amazon

I have to admit, I don’t think B.A. Paris is for me. Last year, I read Behind Closed Doors and hated it… I felt like the plot didn’t move fast enough and the same thing just kept happening over and over again in terms of plot and characters. This was pretty much the same for me. Most of the book moved pretty slowly, and it seemed to be pretty predictable. The first part just every other chapter from the past to the present, and I had to go back to remember what section on was on which was a little annoying/ confusing. I will say though, I really enjoyed the ending (a twist I didn’t see coming) but I didn’t feel list the rest of the book was worth the last five pages or so. Then once I got the part I really enjoyed, the book just ends! I have so many questions… and I get that’s the point, but it just wasn’t doing it for me.

Spot on your list: I’d wait until there’s no longer a hold list on this at the library. Wasn’t that great to me.

The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand
Amazon

Any book by Elin Hilderbrand is a book for me so I may be a little biased. She has the quintessential summer books, all based in Nantucket that have me looking up prices on a flight every time I finish a book. So to start, I would recommend any and all of her books to you! The Perfect Couple was a bit long, but it didn’t drag. There are lots of storylines of characters that are friends/ family getting ready for a huge wedding. When the maid of honor turns up floating in the water the morning of the wedding, the seemingly perfect little worlds of the characters all become unraveled. This is such a good story of lies, deceptions, love, and the understanding that the perfect couple doesn’t exist. It has just the right amount of mystery and romance to keep the plot moving! My only complaint is at the end, there’s still some storylines that I wish were neatly tied up so I know what happened!

Spot on your list: I’d put this right below The Hating Game and 17th Suspect

My Ever Growing List of Must Read Books

Must- Read List:

  1. Without a doubt, the best book I’ve read so far is The Wife Between Us. I literally can’t recommend this enough! I absolutely loved all the twists and turns – psychological thriller. This book is so similar to Last Mrs. Parrish. This is also good, but not as great. Both will keep you guessing until the end!
  2. Tied for Second Orphan Train and Before We Were Yours.  Both historical fiction and very similar to one another about illegal adoptions but reallllly good stories that need to be told, especially Before We Were Yours.
  3. Really relevant today, and pretty long, but will have you sucked in right away is Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things. Realistic, Contemporary fiction about race and a hospital case between a black nurse and white supremacist family. The end is also shocking! (Really, all her books are great!)
  4. So this book led me to read all her other books, and I really enjoyed them all. But it’s One Perfect Lie by Lisa Scottoline. This is also realistic fiction/ mystery and has you second guessing everything and some good turns.
  5. Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison. Another psychological thriller where I thought I knew what was going on and you’re torn between loving the characters and hating the characters. I didn’t know what was going on until the very end!
  6. This should actually probably be higher, but The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It’s actually going to be a movie! Historical fiction (which I thought I didn’t love, but the three books on this list are so great). It is such an amazing story about Nazis and WWII in Germany and France. This story is just so good and incorporates history, romance, action, and some mystery.
  7. Also, I know I loved this historical fiction story, and it was a little heartbreaking (but I read it a while ago before I started documenting my books, just being honest!) is The Light Between The Oceans.
  8. Definitely liked this book, but wasn’t one where I necessarily thought about it after I was finished, Little Fires Everywhere. Contemporary Fiction … but it takes place in Cleveland and is about two families that are drawn together and then torn apart by one event and we watch how it affects them both. I think the most exciting part now is it’s going to be a series on Hulu!
  9. This book was so great but so heartbreaking. Really light, and easy read… a nice way to break up the psychological thrillers. Wish You Were Here or Blind Kiss (Coming August 14, 2018)  by Renee Carlino. Realistic Fiction/ Romance.
  10. Just finished this and it was really good! A little long, and there were parts (beginning and middle) that were very hard to read and some sensitive subject matter, but if you’re able to get through that it is reallly good! The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter. This is more realistic fiction/ mystery/ suspense. It’s like reading Law and Order SVU.  I haven’t read her others yet, but have heard all good things about those!
  11. The cutest Rom-Com in book form. This is such an easy read, great for a vacation or just lounging around and will have you laughing out loud. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne is realistic fiction, Rom-Com book.

Notable Books, not in any particular order:

Overall, authors where I generally love all their books:

  • Lisa Scottoline
  • Jodi Picoult
  • Elin Hilderbrand (really fun, light, summer reads all about Nantucket and Cape Cod).
  • Liane Moriarity (Wrote Big Little Lies) All her books are great EXCEPT her most recent one, Truly, Madly, Guilty. I hated that book!
  • Colleen Hoover
  • Kasie West (YA Books)
  • Renee Carlino
